Favorite Methods of Procrastination

A lot of people wish for more self-discipline so that they can be more productive, but I think procrastination can be a beautiful thing. The gradual lowering of your standards for entertainment. The discoveries made when you go too far into the internet or to the back of your closet. And the naps. Oh the naps!

Let’s take a moment to celebrate procrastinating.

If you’re procrastinating end-of-the-year work, job hunting, or finding a mate so your mom can have grandkids like she’s been begging you for, then know that there are some ways to procrastinate that are better than others.  Here’s a list of the best ways to put off being productive:

1. Internet- It’s the obvious choice.  From FreeRice to Facebook and Twitter to Tacospin, the Internet is an endless source of sidetracking. When you’re just starting to procrastinate you’ll probably stick to social media and your other favorite sites, but when you’ve been off-task for a long time, you might find that your standards have dropped so low that you’re reading about the Han dynasty on Wikipedia or going back to amandaplease.com. Say hi to Penelope for me!

2. Clean Anything – Walk by your room and see some socks on the floor, but have a 10-page paper to write?  Surely your parents/roommate/significant other would prefer that you take a few minutes to tidy up!  Cleaning has never been so bearable!  Before you pass in that paper in class you have to get dressed, which means right now is a fantastic time to do your laundry because walking in naked isn’t going to get you any extra points.

3. Arts and Crafts – That scrapbook you meant to make 5 years ago, the photos you need to put in albums, and the leg warmers you never finished knitting are all very happy to see you. This isn’t procrastination. This is just finishing what you started! [Note: Is putting photos in physical albums still something people do?]

And the greatest of all time:

5. NAPPING!! On a couch. In your bed. On a jazzy futon. On a pool float. On the floor. In the bath. At your desk. In a basket of yarn with a bunch of kittens. IN A HAMMOCK. Napping, anywhere and under any conditions, could not be a better procrastination activity. Go ahead, turn your brain off. Let those hard-working muscles relax. Feel that warm sensation in your core? That’s serenity, man. Let it take you to places unknown. Ride the Zephyr of napping. Whatever it is you have to do can wait. Your brain will be sharper and your body better rested when you wake up. Don’t fight it. Let it be. Let goooooo.

If none of this sounds appealing to you and you really do just want to finish that project, then follow this advice:

  • Leave your phone in another room and have someone change your passwords to your various online accounts.
  • Prioritize what needs to get done first.
  • Set up a comfortable, functional work space.
  • Break your tasks down into manageable parts and when you finish one, reward yourself with a break.
  • Find when you work best.  Is it in the morning?  Right after lunch?  After your friends are all in bed?  Schedule your work for that time.

And most of all, stop reading this blog and go do your work!!

What forms of procrastination are you most prone to? Will we ever find a cure for this struggle that plagues us all??
